Where there is lack, there is opportunity
The construction industry has come under fire in recent months with various ongoing concerns such as lack of skilled labour, lack of supplies and most recently, the interest rate increase. However, where there is a lack, there is a real opportunity for innovation. The timber industry is looking at creating a new hybrid engineered timber made from a combination of Softwood and Hardwood pulp. Should this innovation prove successful, it could see a robust return to the industry and in turn, create a series of new jobs for the timber industries in Victoria and South Australia. Green Triangle Forestry Industry which spans Western Victoria and the Limestone coast In South Australia, has recently received a $1.3 Million dollar Federal Government grant to begin production of this new hybrid engineered timber.
If proven successful, this engineered timber may become another alternative builders can pass on to the consumer. The timber’s use in home renovations, across the building industry and in our boating & maritime industries will no doubt ease pressure in across all new builds. One unknown factor, however, is the cost of this new material to the construction industry and in turn, to the consumer.
As the timber shortage is now a global issue, the requirement to look within our borders for solutions is paramount. It is estimated that in order to supply softwood timber from within Australia, we would need to plant over 450,000 hectares of softwood plantations by 2050 to keep up with demand. We look forward to seeing this innovation come to fruition and perhaps become a much needed change for the industry.
